No, that's not the moon. This is a partial solar eclipse over the redwood trees in Forestville, California,
seen through heavy fog. The fog serves to filter the eclipse,
both rendering it visible against the clouds, and also
protecting the eye behind the camera from direct exposure to
the sun (staring at an unfiltered eclipse can damage your retina).
Further into the fog, the disk of the sun would not be visible;
further out of the fog, the sun would overexpose the film, and
the crescent shape would not be apparent. The additional subtle
colors visible in the fog add to the sense of drama in the scene. |
